From Probes to Pixels: Scaling up soil water content across Montana

Graduate Student (MS or PhD) Position at Montana State University 

We are looking for a highly motivated MS student with excellent data science and programming skills to work with us on “scaling-up” real-time soil water content monitoring and forecasting across Montana. The goal of the project “From Probes to Pixels” is to integrate measurements from Montana’s soil water content monitoring network (Mesonet) with NASA’s Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite mission and environmental data to produce models and maps for soil water content dynamics across Montana.

The successful applicant will be advised by Dr. Andrew Felton and Dr. Anna Schweiger at the Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences (LRES) at Montana State University, and Dr. John Kimball, Director of the Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group at University of Montana. Funding is providing in part through the Montana Water Center, and includes an annual stipend (28 K), tuition waiver, health insurance, and fees.

The Remote Sensing Biodiversity Lab within the Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences at Montana State University has an opening for a PhD student to begin in the spring or fall of 2025. Funding includes an annual stipend (28 K), tuition waiver, health insurance, and fees. Topics can be discussed.
